It all started by simply looking

The history of cinema starts with observation. The brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere created one-minute captures of “real life”, as it happens. Their tool, finished in 1895, was a combination of camera, film developer and projector. It was hard not to notice it when they were filming.

The Tool Creates the Form: le Cinematographe

Le Cinematographe Projector, film developer and camera. Antoine Lumière came up with the idea to create motion pictures after seeing a demonstration of Thomas Edison’s kinetoscope in Paris in 1894. The Lumière brothers have been credited with more than 1,425 different short films.

Who creates the story?

This question is still a key issue for film makers today. Is the story out there, created by the subject(s), or are we creating it? How much intervention into reality counts as “reality”?
