It all started by simply looking
The history of cinema starts with observation. The brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere created one-minute captures of “real life”, as it happens. Their tool, finished in 1895, was a combination of camera, film developer and projector. It was hard not to notice it when they were filming.

Who creates the story?

This question is still a key issue for film makers today. Is the story out there, created by the subject(s), or are we creating it? How much intervention into reality counts as “reality”? How to face the fact that almost all cinema is an intervention into time (Rouch)? Here is the first “story” in the history of cinema (Lumiere brothers).
